This is the only non-musical selection in our “musical journey”, which has been included precisely because it conveys the rich linguistic, rhythimic, and acoustic dimensions of oral history, which cannot be separated from singing and musical traditions. The shubhraj can be described as a panegyric made u of recitation chanted on one note. Here, the recitation is rendered by Multan Khan if the Manganiyar musician caste in honour of the Sodha, which is a sub-group in the larger Parmar clan belonging to the Rajput community.

For each clan (and among Rajputs themselves, there are several like Rathod, Bhati, Gehlot, Pratihar, Parmar, Solanki, Deora, and so on), there are specific renderings of the shubhraj, which are memorized by genealogists, notably the Langa and Manganiyar musicians. While most versions of the shubhaj do not narrate the entire geneology of a particular clan, they tend to focus on its more illustrious ancestors and the events associated with them. Of particular interest in this rendering of the shubhraj is its vigorous juxtaposition of stressed and non-stressed syllables, punctuated with alliterative rhyming words and a relentless tempo, which is sustained by Manganiyar reciter with consummate ease.
