Sung by women the women of the Kamad community, this song deals with a woman’s pregnancy in the sixth or seventh month when she is in her parents’ home. Almost all such songs about pregnancy focus on a variety of details: the early symptoms of pregnancy; the yearning of pregnant women to eat coal, clay, lime, among other base substances; the specific ornaments worn during different stages of pregnancy, and so on. Here too the song celebrates the medicinal and restorative powers of spices, notably ajwain, which is generally given to a woman mixed with almonds, jaggery, and ghee (clarified butter). The refrain that runs through the song has the woman complaining: “If I survive these birth pangs now, I’ll never go to bed with my husband again. My back aches and I’ve lost all sleep [in my eyes].”

Sadh-Poorana is a good example of the kind of song sung by women for themselves; it has no specific audience. Steeped in the details of everyday life, the song proceeds through stanzas of four lines in which three lines consist of the refrain, which can easily be picked up by women in the community, even if they have not heard the song before.
