In the numerous versions of Ratan Rano (literally “Jewel King”) song, the central motif is that of an absent hero or husband, for whom he wife or lover waits in anticipation, evoking an ambience of desire and pain. The four stanzas of this particular rendition elaborate on how the nayika (heroine) lures her lover through a series of seductive images, for example, the intimacy of an upper-story residence in a beautiful palace and the potency of liquor extracted from the mahua flower. Interspersing these images are refrains in which the lover is urged to return to his native land.

Rendered powerfully in a semi-classical mode by Allah Jilahi Bai of the Bikaner court, the composition is sun in a highly original interpretation of Raj Mand, one of the most popular melodic forms in the gharanas favoured by feudal families in Rajasthan. The tabla accompaniment follows the classical rhythm Dadra (6 beats), punctuated with the occasional rhythmic flourishes of raggi, reminiscent of the semi-classical tradition of thumri, from which Allah Jilahi Bai drew her inspiration.
