We begin our musical journey with three early recordings of some of the most popular songs in the Rajasthani folk repertoire, as sung by three legendary Langa performers—Allaudin Khan, accompanied by Sumar Kan on the sindi sarangi and Noor Mohammad on the gujaratan sarangi.

Recorded in the studios of the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai in 1973, these songs are relatively short, not least because they were first produced on extended play records (45 RPM). While these recording conditions placed obvious restraints on improvisation and repetition, these versions of Kurjan, Gorbandh, and Hichki are very special, in so far as they recall a time when the singing of Langas had not been internalized. Indeed, the attentive listener will note that these songs are not accompanied by the dholak (drum), which was not used by the Langa singers until the early 1980s.

Hichki literally means “hiccups”. Playing on the widespread belief that hiccups are precipitated when someone remembers us, this ironic song plays on the ambivalence of the lover, who is caught between loving and hating hiccups. The beloved is at once near (through the act of remembering) and yet so far (in a distant land). Alternating between reminding the lover of the small seeds of pearl-millet (barja) being pecked at home and the gifts of anklets and toe-rings expected on his return, Hichki plays around the motif of absence with earthy folk resilience.
