This hauntingly beautiful song is from the improvised repertoire of the Kalbelia nomadic women. Sung by Hema Kalbelia, with no instrumental support, not even the pungi (gourd-pipe), which normally accompanies Kalbelia songs—Chandiyo is the name of a philanderer, who has ensnared the heart of a woman only to abandon her. From the vivid images in the song, we learn that the woman (who remains unnamed) had followed Chandiyo “like a healthy, joyous goat” to different nomadic camps, after adoring herself to look beautiful for him. At first totally enamored of her fickle lover, the woman finally sees through his deceit: Chandiyo cheats a trader by selling him a diseased goat instead of a healthy one. Through the constant repetition of the refrain “Chandiyo cheated” (Chandiyo dhokho diyo), the song sustains one continuous melodic line, the voice piercing the air with a knife-like clarity.
